Youth Deer Hunt - 9/24/2011

Man, what an awesome day! Started off my morning at 5:50 a.m. Got up took a shower had some cookies for breakfast and then headed out to the woods. Sat in the woods for a half hour or so and waited for the daylight to come. As daylight came I re-positioned my chair so that I could have a shot in all of the shooting lanes we had made earlier in the season. We sat till about 8 o'clock in the morning when we heard a deer blowing at us. My dad turned around in his seat to see if he could see the deer that was blowing. He did see a big spike horn but he didn't think that was the one blowing at us. We have no clue how the deer could have detected us, but it did. The spike horn ran away shortly after that. We then sat around till about 9 o'clock in the morning when my dad spotted some does walking in on my left side. I slowly raised my gun up and through my port hole of my left window. Doe after doe came walking through my shooting lane, but no buck. The does never detected us luckily, but towards the end they became a little spooky. They stuck around for about 5 minutes and headed off towards the swamp area. After that we had no action until the last half an hour of our morning hunt. Around 10:30 or so we heard turkey's yelping. I thought they came from behind us but my dad thought he heard them out front. We kept our eyes open but couldn't seem to find where they were at. We waited for 15 minutes or so and my dad was getting ready to call it a morning. He turned around to make sure the coast was clear behind us, but it wasn't. There, right behind our blind were Toms! Nice size gobblers about 30 yards out. My dad got his shotgun from beside him and raise it up. They were out of range for about 5 minutes but one came in range, and like I told him, he better take the first long beard he gets a shot at. So he did as I said and dropped a nice 6 inch. longy! We were done for the morning and headed in to go to lunch at Long Horn Steak House for my dad's birthday lunch.

We headed back out to the woods at around 4:50 p.m. We drove down to our parking spot, set up our gear, and headed in. We walked down the driveway to our entry spot and started our journey in to our blind. Not 1 minute in and my dad spotted a doe! We quickly got to our knees so we were as undetectable as possible. I had my gun ready for a buck if it was following, and sure enough here comes the buck. It stopped and looked as if to be making a little scrape but then headed off down the trail. I had picked out an opening where I was going to shoot it if he came through. What do you know, he came right to where I wanted him! As soon as he stepped out I let him have it. He dropped in it's tracks, which I was thankful I even hit him at 90 yards with my 20 gauge. Quickly we ran up to the deer who was still kicking and could tell he was a decent buck! I only had one shell and I used it on him so my dad ran to our blind to go get another shell so I could finish him off. I shot him at the base of the next and that pretty much ended his fun. I counted up the points and established it was a 10 pointer! My dad was filling out the tag and I was tweeting with excitement! I took the job of hauling that guy out of the woods, which was really difficult because of all the fallen trees and branches. But I got it pretty much to the car and my dad helped me the rest of the way. We put it in the car and brought it back to the house, gutted it, rinsed it out, and hung it.

I had an awesome day today! It was filled with so much excitement, hunting, dad's birthday lunch, hunting! I tagged a great buck and got to make a ever lasting memory! I love hunting.
