Weekend Hunt

This weekend was a fun one! We started our hunt off early on Saturday morning. At around 8:30 a.m. we saw a nice group of toms, there were at least 10 in the flock. I still had my fall turkey permit, so I was anxiously waiting for one to step out in range. Of course, none of the toms stepped out in range. They just kept working their way up the side of the ridge, looking for acorns. Once they went over the hill it was back to deer hunting for my dad, who is using a cross bow. We saw nothing for a half an hour, but then those toms came back! This time, one would make a fatal mistake. As we were watching these toms for what seemed to be an hour, a 6 point deer managed to slip by us. My dad spotted it after he had been through all of our shooting lanes and couldn't get a shot off. He tried to brush it off his shoulder but he was pretty disappointed. But, soon enough he would be happy again! About 10 minutes after the buck slipped by, one tom made a flaw. He stepped into the shooting lane 35 yards out. My dad yelped at him, he stuck his head up, and that was the end of it for him. After I shot, he barely even moved. I went up to him examined him and figured that his was a dandy! He had a 10" beard one spur that was 1" and the other one was busted off. All in all a good turkey. We stayed out for a few more hours after that and did see one spike, but let him go.

Today, we went out for a morning hunt but had very little action. I spotted a lone doe at about 9 a.m. but she was in a hurry so I didn't get a chance to film her. Later on my dad spotted a group of 10 toms, which may be the same flock that I shot mine from. I did get a chance to film them! It was a pretty cool sight! After that excitement we had nothing else walk by us, so we checked the trail cam and headed in.
